Voices of the Ancestors of Bukusu
Preserved for Tomorrow

The Bukusu people have gathered by the fire for generations, passing down wisdom through story and song. We are here to ensure these flames never die—digitizing oral traditions, rituals, and cultural memory for the generations yet unborn.

Why We Exist

The Fire is Still Burning

The Bukusu are one of the seventeen clans of the Luhya nation, guardians of a cultural heritage that has survived centuries. Yet in the rush toward modernity, the old ways face erosion—urban migration scatters families, elders pass with their stories untold, and the young grow distant from their roots.

We believe that preservation is not nostalgia. It is resistance against forgetting. By bringing together the keepers of knowledge—council elders, ritual specialists, mothers, and youth—we are building a bridge between what was and what will be.

Every song recorded, every folktale transcribed, every ceremony documented is an act of love for the Bukusu people and a gift to those yet to come.

Our Approach

Gathering by the Digital Fire

We do not come as outsiders to extract knowledge. We come as children of the community, sitting at the feet of elders, learning and preserving together.

01

Listening

We seek out those who carry the old wisdom—village elders, ritual specialists, the women who know the songs of birth and mourning. We listen without interrupting.

02

Recording

Using audio and visual tools, we capture not just words, but the cadence of voice, the gesture of hands, the context that gives meaning to tradition.

03

Teaching

We train community members in digital skills so they become the archivists of their own heritage, ensuring sustainability long after we leave.

04

Returning

All knowledge is validated by the community before archiving. Nothing is shared without consent. The stories belong to the people.

What We Are Saving

Every recording is a heartbeat. Every transcript is a breath. This is what we have gathered so far from the community.
